Find out a little about me

Hi everyone, my name is Scott Torrance and I have recently handed in my notice to pursue the dream of starting up my own business.

I have been spending the past few years working in IT sales for companies including Cisco and Dell and in my spare time I’ve followed my passion for training and personal development with Junior Chamber International.

I now plan on combining this passion with my desire to start a business exploring how technology can be applied to improve the delivery, implementation and monitoring of  training & personal development with the ultimate aim of helping people to achieve their goals.

The business is in the very early stages but as I focus 100% on the business and develop the concept I plan on being very open and honest .

The reason I have started this blog is to track and share my progress.

As I go through the initial stages I will be implementing the principles of The Lean Startup movement and I will share my experiences (the highs and the lows) of implementing these principles to my startup.

If you work for a startup or are thinking about it I’d love to hear from you.

Join me on the journey, learn from my mistakes and let’s start re-thinking how we approach startups!

  1. Hi Scott
Even those who start lean and mean will have a plan or a goal, or an interim step that gives the impression of structured progress, so I am keen to explore those first steps that you publish.

    • Thanks for your feedback Colin. I agree with you, the way I see it is the difference between ‘business planning’ and a traditional business plan that aims to predict variables such as revenue and the structure of the business. The problem is that many of the inputs and variables are simply unknown at this stage of a business and very rarely does a traditional business plan add much value to the business at this early stage.

My plan in the initial stage will focus around testing the assumptions that I have around the value that the offering will provide to users and the potentials for growth of the business.

We need to re-think how we approach startups.

  2. interesting reading so far, Scott.

i admire your approach and openness – stick with it!
